Children's Basketball League Information

The dates and times on this page are subject to change.

Registration Begins August 15th for the 2018-2019 Season

PSO Basketball is made up of two leagues that are progressive in nature.  Our rules are designed to help boys and girls learn the game of basketball while having fun in a competitive yet nurturing environment.

Leagues and Divisions

NCAA League

The NCAA division plays their games cross court on our portable goals.  For practice, each team is given one practice a week for 1 hour on half of their cross court.

Boys Divisions:  PreK     Girls Divisions:   PreK - Kindergarten
   Kindergarten      1st Grade
   1st Grade       2nd Grade
   2nd Grade
*Grades could be combined if there are not enough teams signed up in a division.  Only 2 grades
will be combined but they will not be combined with NBA division teams.  This is likely to happen
with the 1st and 2nd Grade Girls but we will keep them separate if at all possible.  PreK Boys could
be combined with the PreK-K Girls if either the boys or the girls division needs additional teams.
   NCAA Goal Height:
   1.  The PreK Boys and the PreK-Kindergarten Girls Divisions play at the lowest setting (about 6'6")
   2.  The Kindergarten Boys Division uses the first notch on our goals (about 7'4")
   3.  The 1st Grade Boys and Girls Divisions use the 2nd notch (about 7'9")
   4.  The 2nd Grade Boys and Girls Division uses the 3rd notch on our goals (about 8'3")
  5.  If divisions are combined, the goal height of the younger division will be used.

NBA League

The NBA division plays their games full court.  The 3rd Grade Boys and the 3rd-4th Grade girls play on 9' goals (4th Girls may be moved up to 9.5' if not combined with 3rd Grade girls).  For practice, each team is given one practice a week for 1 hour on a half court.

Boys Divisions:   3rd Grade    Girls Divisions:   3rd Grade
   4th Grade     4th Grade
   5th Grade      5th Grade
   6th Grade      6th Grade

*Grades could be combined if there are not enough teams signed up in a division.  Only 2 grades will be combined but they will not be combined with NCAA division teams.  This is likely to happen with the 3rd and 4th Grade Girls along with the 5th and 6th Grade Girls but we will keep them separate if at all possible.  It is very unlikely that we would opt to combine the 4th and 5th grade girls this season as it would keep the 4th graders as the younger group for a second season in a row.

NBA Goal Height
The 3rd Grade Boys and the 3rd and 4th Grade Girls will play on 9' Goals (4th Girls may be moved up to 9.5' if not combined with 3rd Grade girls).  All other NBA divisions play on 10' goals.

Age Determining Dates for 2018-2019 Season

Players must play in the division of their current grade unless they are approved by the league to play up a grade level.  Players are not allowed to play down a grade.  The age determining dates are only used to determine if a player is too old to play with his or her grade and must play up a grade division.  The age determining dates are in line with UIL and TAPPS rules which govern most school athletics in the state of Texas.  The following chart offers a quick reference for determining player eligibility.  Players who do not meet the division criteria for eligibility are not eligible to participate in that division and must play up.  There is no appeal available to the parents nor opportunity for board review.  When two grades are combined to form one division, the higher (older) grade is used for age determination.

Each team will have one practice a week that will include one hour of court time in the Sports and Fitness Center at Prestonwood.  Coaches schedule this practice with PSO.  Parents need to contact their coach for practice details.  If you are a coach, click on the coach page link under helpful links for more details on how to request a practice time.  If additional practice time is desired, the coach will have to schedule that on his own at a location other than Prestonwood.

Spiritual Development
In keeping with the mission of PSO, PSO Basketball is committed to introducing Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord to our players and mentoring them in the Christian life by the example set by our coaches and league officials. To that end, coaches will be supplied with devotionals that will be shared weekly with their players. Additionally, prayer will be a common at practices and games. The Gospel will also be presented to all players 7 and older who will have a chance to respond to Christ's call on their lives.

Practice Night Devotions

Each team should have a devotion before or after each practice.  If your coach or a team representative is not having a devotion time at practice each week, please contact Brad Freeman at [email protected].

Coaching Application

Head Coaches must register online for free (click HERE) and submit an online volunteer background check.  To begin the background check process, please email Brian Bennett at [email protected] and put "Basketball Coach Background Check" in the subject line.  When you complete the Head Coach registration process you will be able to send a registration email out to your team with a code that will allow the parents of your players to register for your team.  Please read all of the information on the Coach Registration Page.

Assistant Coaches must email Gail Mixon at [email protected] to let her know the team and head coach that they will be assisting.  Assistant Coaches must also submit a background check through the process described above for head coaches.  Please read all of the information on the Coach Page.

Submit all other basketball questions to Gail Mixon at [email protected].

Coaches Meeting

Coaches will be required to attend a coaches meeting where a clear message will be provided regarding the mission of the PSO Basketball League, league rules, expectations, etc. All coaches will be expected to attend and sign a statement of understanding. Coaches meeting dates are listed on the Key Dates page.  You must attend one of the mandatory meetings.

Coaching Clinic

Before the season starts, if there is enough interest, we will conduct an optional coaching clinic for all coaches in our league. This clinic does not replace (and is in addition to) the mandatory Coach Meeting described above.  During this clinic we will provide suggested drills, plays, strategy and other tips to help you be the best coach, leader and mentor possible for the children and their families.  The coaching clinic will be held in November.  The date has not been set at this time.

Post-Season Tournament

There will be a post-season tournament in the NBA (3rd - 6th grade) divisions.  Participation in this tournament is an added bonus and not a right.  It is not guaranteed that all teams will make it into the tournament (at least 4 teams from each division will qualify for the post-season tournament but every effort will be made to include all teams if space permits).  Seeding in this tournament will be determined based on win/loss record during the regular season.  In the event of ties the online standings may not be correct (please check the official rules for tie breaker rules).  Teams will only advance to the post-season tournament if they can field a team of at least 5 players and one coach at the Skills Clinic (please check key dates for date and time).  The tournament is a single elimination tournament.  Failure to attend the Skills Clinic is considered a loss in the tournament.
