Youth Basketball -> Maverick League - Frequently Asked Questions

I don't see a link to register 8 and Under or 10 and Under girls.  How do I register them?
In our girls league we combine the 8 and 9 year olds into one division (9U) and we combine the 10 and 11 year olds into another division (11U).  If your daughter is 10 she needs to register for the 11 and Under division. If she is 8 she needs to register for the 9 and Under division.

How do we register a team in the Mavericks League?
To register as a team, each player needs to register individually and put the same coach's name in the preferred coach box during registration.  The coach needs to submit a team roster to PSO before the registration deadline.  Team rosters can be faxed to Brad Freeman at 972-820-5200.  The coach is also responsible for making sure that all players on the team have submitted a birth certificate to PSO.

Do you have to already be on a team to register for the Mavericks League?
No.  You can register online and leave the preferred coach box blank.  We will place you on a team based on your evaluation score.

If a player was evaluated in the Upward League at the end of last season, does he or she need to be evaluated this year for the Mavericks League?
Yes, all players new to the Mavericks League must be evaluated.

If a player is new to the Mavericks League but is already a part of a team, does he or she need to be evaluated this year for the Mavericks League?
Yes, all players new to the Mavericks League must be evaluated.

Will we play on regulation goals?
8U/9U Girls, as well as 8U Boys will play on 9 ft goals and all other age groups will play on the standard 10 ft.

Will the teams be allowed to press during the games?
8U/9U Girls and Boys can only press during the 4th quarter. 10U Boys can only press in the 2nd half and 10U/11U Girls and 11U Boys can press during the whole game. However, under no circumstances is pressing allowed when a team leads by 20 points or more.

When is the coaches meeting and is it mandatory?
All head coaches are required to attend ONE of the following coaches meeting:

Monday, October 15th – 6:30 – 9:00 pm @ PSO Sports & Fitness Center
Thursday, October 18th – 6:30 – 9:00 pm @ PSO Sports & Fitness Center

Will you provide any type of coaches training?
Yes, in November we will be offering a free coaching clinic at the Sports & Fitness Center that will include on court demonstrations.  The specific date and time will be posted on the Mavs Key Dates page.  PSO Basketball Director Brad Freeman will also be providing a play or drill of the week on his website at www.pureshot.net.

Will all of the games be played at PSO?
No.  Some games will be played at the Prestonwood Christian Academy Field House gym and there may be 1 or 2 of your games scheduled at gyms that are within 5 minutes of PSO.

When will the games be played?
70% of the games will be played on Saturday; 20% on Friday night and 10% on Sunday afternoon.

What are the primary differences in the Maverick League and Upward?
The primary differences have to do with the traditional game of basketball and the age groups offered. Some examples are:

  1. In the Mavericks League you can bring in formed teams while in the Upward League players can only sign up as individuals and are placed on teams by the league.

  2. The Mavericks League plays on a regulation court with paid referees.  The Upward League plays on smaller courts in the younger divisions and the coaches referee the games.

  3. In Upward every player plays an equal amount of time.  In Mavericks each player is only guaranteed 1 ½ quarters of play.

  4. The goal heights differ in each league.  You can find the goal height for each league on the FAQ page.

  5. In the Mavericks League all forms of defense are allowed along with pressing (pressing rules differ between the age divisions).  There is no pressing allowed in the Upward League and all teams are required to play man-to-man defense.

  6. In the Mavericks League we keep score and post standings on our website.  Teams are seeded into an end-of-season championship tournament based on their season record.  In the Upward League we do not keep league standings and our younger divisions do not keep score.  Upward does not have a tournament.

  7. Mavericks divisions are based on age (the age date is September 1st) while the Upward divisions are based on grade.

  8. In general the Upward League provides more of a recreational atmosphere while the Mavericks League will provide more situations with competitive pressure.

  9. We strongly encourage the beginning players to play in the Upward League before trying the Mavericks League.
