Prestonwood Sports Outreach Mission Statement
The mission of the Sports Outreach Ministry is to glorify God by introducing
Jesus Christ to as many people as possible, using the vehicle of sports and
fitness in order to reach out to those around us with the message of
salvation in Jesus Christ.
PSO Children's Team Sports Mission Statement
To glorify God by introducing Jesus Christ as Lord to as many people as
possible and developing children in their chosen sports, through a quality
youth sports program. Further we will build them up emotionally by teaching
positive life values.
Code Of Ethics
PSO
Code of Support for Parents and Fans
1. I
understand that as a participant of PSO Sports, my child is required to
attend the End-of-Season Celebration or Skills Clinic. In accordance
with our mission statement, there will be a gospel presentation at this
event. There are rules in each sport that
prevent a team from advancing to the post-season tournament if players from
that team do not attend the entire event. Please check with your league commissioner for the
sport-specific rules on this. I understand that my team does not have the
right to play in the post-season tournament but that it is a bonus to the
season based on league rules.
2. I
can expect that my child will receive emotional support while participating
in PSO.
3. I
can expect that my child will receive a fair amount of playing time, which
should constitute a minimum of 50% of each regular season game. “Fair”
takes into account showing up to practice, pre-game events and demonstrating
sportsmanlike conduct.
4. I
can expect that "Value Lessons" will be taught weekly at practice.
5. I
can expect that games and practices will involve prayer.
6. I
can expect that the directors of the various PSO sports and leagues be
present and will monitor all games. They will ask ANY individual or
individuals who are not following the rules set forth by PSO to leave to
maintain a positive environment for the children.
7. I
can expect that PSO will train all coaches. Occasionally due to increased
participants, we may ask parents to step up to coach when no other coach is
available.
PSO
Parents and Fan Code of Ethics
1. I will encourage and practice good sportsmanship by demonstrating
positive support for all players, coaches and officials at every game,
practice or other PSO event.
2. I understand that as a parent and/or fan I am not allowed at any time to approach
the officials before, during, or after games to discuss any calls made
during a game by them. This includes yelling or provoking others to
question an official’s judgment. Failure to abide by this rule could result
in my family, including my child, to be asked to leave and dismissal from
the league.
3. I will place the emotional and physical well being of my child ahead of
my personal desire to win.
4. I will support coaches and officials working with my child in order to
encourage a positive and enjoyable experience for all.
5. I will support my child’s coaching staff. If I have a concern or
question I will not discuss the matter with other parents or players,
instead I will
approach the head coach privately after a practice session, never after a
game.
6. I understand that the coach makes all the decisions with regards to
practice times, practice locations, playing time and lineups. The coach’s
intent is to play each child a minimum of 50% per game unless the player is
being disciplined for specific reasons of which a parent shall be notified.
(Reasons for disciplinary action may include missing numerous practices,
pre-game activities, displays of unsportsmanlike conduct, etc.)
7. I expect a sports environment that is free from drugs,
tobacco, alcohol and vulgar or abusive language and will refrain from their
use at all PSO sports events.
8. I will remember that the game is for children and their fun and
enjoyment.
9.
My child and I will treat other players, coaches, fans and officials with
respect. We will refrain from approaching our opposing coaches, players and
their families, as well as officials, in a negative manner before, during or
after games. Any concerns will be directed to my coach to be handled
within the league.
10. I recognize that sports are competitive and my child may face defeat or
failure. I will be supportive regardless of the outcome of the game, and
remind them that a win or loss is a team effort and not a reflection of any
individual child.
11. I recognize that PSO coaches teach value lessons and that games start
with prayer. I respect the rights of everyone to choose participation in
these practices.
12. I understand that I will be held responsible for the actions of my
children and their friends under my watch who are seen destroying church
property (i.e. hanging, climbing or pulling on nets or goals, etc.) whether
it be at a practice or a game and I will have to repair or replace the
damaged property.
Parent’s Attitude towards Children’s Sports and PSO Philosophy on
Competition
We
often tell new parents in children’s leagues that sports places a child, for
the first time, in the arena of public opinion for success and failure. Up
to this point, if a child failed at home or at school, the only ones that
knew were those directly involved—the parent, teacher and child. Now, a
child’s success or failure is viewed by dozens from the
sidelines/bleachers. This often creates a dilemma for the parents in that
it is difficult for a parent to accept that they and their child are
responsible, at least in part, for both success and failure. As a result,
parents often place blame on the coach, officials or the league for any
failure. We would encourage you to be mature in your thinking in this
situation and put this in a proper perspective. We should also understand
that the process of losing can be a positive experience for children, if
they use it as a springboard for working harder, focusing, learning better
the skills of the sport and, most importantly, to overcome adversity in a
positive way.
A
second major issue in youth athletics is competition and how a league and
parents view competition. We have all heard and seen numerous stories of
the competitive drive of parents and coaches that is out of control. PSO
wants great competition with great class and a Christ-like attitude. We do
not fear competition. We, in fact, view competition as a great motivator.
Occasionally, parents believe that one team or coach “recruited” more than
they should. Please understand that most of our children’s sports leagues
are not primarily draft driven, in that children are not placed on to teams
by the league, but parents are given the freedom to form teams with the best
players available. We do not limit a coach’s ability to recruit members
beyond not allowing the removal of a player based on performance or holding
a multiple player ‘try-out’ for choosing children. For the most part,
coaches are encouraged to aggressively recruit players for their team. This
allows our organization to reach out to unchurched children and parents that
may not know Christ and recruitment increases healthy competition. It is
important that you, as a parent, understand that PSO encourages wholesome
competition and teams to recruit great new players. It is our desire that
we train the best young athletes in the North Dallas area; that they use the
physical and spiritual training they receive to influence others,
especially, as they mature as athletes in junior high and high school.
